Maternity Session Preparation

MATERNITY SESSION PREPARATION

MATERNITY SESSION DETAILS:

  • Best time to do Maternity Session is between 32-36 weeks.
  • See below for different types of maternity sessions that we offer, and what to bring for your session.
  • If you'll be providing your own clothing (outdoor sessions), see "What to Wear" section below for super helpful ideas and inspiration.

***IN STUDIO MATERNITY SESSION:

In-Studio Maternity Mini-Sessions are styled by Sarah.  She has several gorgeous maternity gowns that photograph beautifully, as well as some other outfit options.  (See images below and check out our Maternity Gallery here for most recent dresses/shots.)  We will customize the session based on colors you like, the gender (if known) of your baby, and more.  (If you have an outfit you'd like to include, please send Sarah a quick iphone photo of that before session.  Thanks!)

Please note on your paperwork if you would like a more conservative look (ex: no open-belly gowns), or if you are comfortable showing off your bump for a few photos.  We have several gowns and outfit options, full coverage slips that go under our lace dresses (size M-L), and more.  If you would rather bring your own attire, please let us know ahead of time and we can help you style that.   See "What to Wear" section below for helpful tips.

STUDIO Sessions: Mom: Please wear the following:

  • Nude colored STRAPLESS bra and full-coverage nude colored panties.
  • If your wedding ring(s) fit, or can fit for just the session, bring that and any other jewelry that has significance to baby/partner.
  • MAKEUP: Please put an extra coat of mascara on, as it will make eyelashes extra pretty!  Avoid any makeup (eyeshadow, powder, lip gloss) with glitter.
  • DAD / SIBLING(S): Keep in neutral colors, no busy or tiny patterns, etc.  We have a closet full of adorable little dresses for little girls, too.
  • SEE BELOW for "What to Wear Visuals" - this will help plan your partner/child outfits.

***OUTDOOR
MATERNITY SESSION:

Outdoor Maternity Mini-Sessions are styled by the client with helpful what-to-wear tips from Sarah (see below).  These are done in a beautiful nature spot in Southwest Austin (78739).

WHAT TO WEAR VISUALS:

GENERAL WHAT-TO-WEAR TIPS:

  • Mom should wear something form fitting.  (Remember: For this session, we want to SHOW OFF your beautiful baby bump, not hide it in any way.)
  • Great places to get dresses:  Amazon (See note in first bullet in section above.)   www.lulus.com (Search for "Maxi Dresses."  They have SO many beautiful ones!)  And Sew Trendy Accessories has stunning maternity gowns.   http://www.sewtrendyaccessories.com   Be sure to allow enough time for shipping.
  • Please do not wear black, as that color is slimming and will disguise your baby bump
  • Hide those bra straps!  Wear a bra that hides well under your outfit.  And wear undergarments that don’t show through your clothes.
  • MAKEUP: Put an extra coat of mascara on, as it will make eyelashes extra pretty!  Avoid any makeup (eyeshadow, powder, lip gloss) with glitter.
  • If your wedding ring(s) fit, or can fit for just the session, bring that and any other jewelry that has significance to baby/partner.
  • If wearing fancy shoes or boots with any sort of heel, please also bring a comfortable pair of shoes for mild walking, as we walk down a hill (for morning sessions) or down a path a bit (evening sessions).
  • Textures and layers always look nice and add depth and detail to the photo.
  • Solid colors are best.  Busy, loud patterns or logos will draw too much attention in your photos, so solids or subtle patterns are always a safer bet!
  • Avoid clothes with fine, repetitive lines typically found on men’s dress shirts or suits.  These detailed lines can be difficult for the camera to register and may appear as wavy lines in your photos.
  • If including your significant other and/or kids (when applicable), they should coordinate (complimentary colors and similar style) with what you’ll be wearing.
  • Check for wrinkles.  Details will show up in your portraits, so be sure to iron out any wrinkles, remove lint and loose threads.
  • Don’t over-do accessories.  No watches or extra-bulky jewelry please.
  • Consider wearing dresses or tops that cover your arms partially or fully if you are concerned about how your upper arms look.
  • If you wear eye-glasses all the time, feel free to bring them.  But if you can do without your glasses or have contact lenses, this is a better option.  Eyeglasses can cause a reflection of the flash or nearby objects.
  • Hairspray! – I can’t say enough about spritzing your hair with some spray, especially long hair!
  • Manicure/Pedicure – Put a fresh coat of clear or neutral colored nail and toenail polish on.  Avoid extremely bright or fluorescent nail color.
